I am a long-standing volunteer with the Dementia Society and I am proud to be currently serving as chair of the board of directors. My mom, Shirley, had dementia and passed away in 2010. My volunteer work in support of the Dementia Society is my way of honouring my mom while giving something back to a wonderful organization that helped our family in such a meaningful way.
This year, I’m participating in the BrainyActive Challenge. This is the Dementia Society's fundraising campaign that replaces our annual Walk for Dementia due to COVID-19 restrictions. I commit to doing a brain-stimulating activity everyday, rain or shine, until (at least) Thanksgiving (October 12th), including running to and up the stairs behind Parliament Hill.
Did you know that physical and mental activities of any kind – especially those you enjoy and do with others – can prevent, delay, and slow down dementia? The BrainyActive Challenge engages you to connect with loved ones and community safely – both virtually and in-person – while respecting COVID measures.
Will you please help me to reach my fundraising goal?
By making a donation to my BrainyActive Challenge, you’ll be helping the 24,000 people in Ottawa and Renfrew County living with dementia, their caregivers and families access the coaching, connections and programs offered by the Dementia Society to keep them active and minimize the social isolation made worse by COVID.
The money we raise stays here in our region. The need is great in our community.
With your help we can:
• Connect people living with dementia and their caregivers to programs, resources, information, and each other;
• Fund programs that help people living with dementia stay active, get social and enjoy meaningful lives;
• Raise awareness of how to prevent dementia and improve lives by creating a dementia-friendly community.
Whatever you can give will help – it all adds up! I greatly appreciate your support and thank you for helping me to reach my fundraising goal.
